Dear Father,

What I have learned this year is that college is really no different than high school. The people are the same, there are just more of them now. But what I find to be truly redeeming are those few who stand out, who are individuals, who can think for themselves and not be afraid to do so.

Unfortunately, these people are scarce in the world. But I think that makes them all the more valuable and awe-inspiring.

I believe that we are ourselves through other people and, during this year I have had the freedom to explore exactly who I am, what I like, what I care about, and how I think. I am doing all of this through others because THEY have given me the chance to see other views of the world.

But what really astounds me is how quickly we bond, share memories, laugh and cry, and how quickly those same people who have shown me the depths of myself, of my heart, mind, and soul, can be gone.

So I wanted to sit down and take a moment to acknowledge them and all they’ve done for me. I wanted to share these thoughts with you, because I think it is entirely too often we say “I’ll hang out with that person later” for whatever reason when the terrifying reality is they could be gone tomorrow, in the blink of an eye.
And I think it is truly troublesome to think that I, before this last year, had the same mindset.

The world is a beautiful place, Father. And I am blessed to be here and meet and interact with those I love.

While I’m on this topic, I was wondering, do you think maybe sometime you could put your phone down and just talk with me? I’d really like that, and it doesn’t happen enough.

Your loving daughter,
Melanie
